Balloon Tree Wood

This small piece of woodland lies on the ‘Way of the Roses’ the coast-to-coast cycle route that passes through Stamford Bridge. It was bought by Sustrans, the charity that manages the National Cycle Network, to enable cyclists from York to Stamford Bridge to avoid crossing the busy main road. A tarmac path now passes through the wood before turning up onto the viaduct and arriving in the village at the old station.

The path and woodland are looked after by a volunteer group known as York Greenway Champions (www.yorkgreenwaychampions.btck.co.uk) and a circular path has been built through the wood that makes a pleasant walk, particularly popular with dog walkers from the village. The group wants to continue to improve access to the wood as well as promoting wildlife and biodiversity and would welcome help from Stamford Bridge residents.
